The Armourial Bearings were devised by the British in 1877.

A note on the Kesaria Dhwaj (Saffron Flag) of Kotah

The Kesaria Dhwaj, or the saffron coloured flag, was presented to Rao Rattan of Bundi by Emperor Jehangir around 1624 A.D. . in recognition of his meritorious services as the Governor of Burhanpur in putting down the revolt of Prince Khurram (later Shah Jehan).Rao Rattan was a grandee of the Imperial Court and enjoyed the confidence and favour of Jehangir. When Kotah was given as an independent grant to Rao Rattan’s second son, the able Prince Madho Singh, who thereafter became the first ruler of kotah and came to be known as Rao Madho Singh.

When Prince Khurram ascended the Mughal throne, thereafter known as Emperor Shah Jehan, he ratified the grant of Kotah in 1631 A.D. Both Bundi and Kotah had similar saffron coloured flags. In 1713 A.D. there was a fratricidal struggle between Bundi and Kotah and Maharao Bhim Singh I of Kotah raided Bundi and carried back to Kotah items of historical importance and treasure which included the Kesaria Dhwaj presented by Jehangir. In 1719 A.D. Maharao Bhim Singh took DeekshaDeeksha at Jatipura from Acharya Gopinathji and became a prime devotee of Lord Shri Krishna and follower of the Ballabh Kul Sampradaya . Since that time, the Garuda emblem has been emblazoned on the Kesaria Dhwaj and thereafter every State Flag has this distinctive emblem. The Garuda is the king of all Birds, the Great Eagle and is the Vahan of Lord Vishnu.

Since textiles do not last long and tend to age and dis-integrate when exposed to sun and weather, the original Kesaria Dhwaj got destroyed. But till 1948, the Kesaria Dhwaj was used by the State at all functions and ceremonials. It flies from the residence of the Maharao and from the Garh, was used on royal cars motor-boats and aeroplanes and was used by the State Forces and the Police.
